Step Back in Time: Knights & Castles on the Lawn

Dust off your chainmail and make your way to Hay Castle this August for a spectacular event in a truly historic location.

On Saturday 2nd to Sunday 3rd August, Knights & Castle on the Lawn is a free, all-ages event that brings the magic and mayhem of medieval life to the Welsh border, organised by Hay Castle Trust and Classroom Adventures.

History Comes Alive

Just a 50-minute drive from Lucksall Holiday Park, this Knights & Castle weekend of live-action history has something for every brave heart and curious mind.

Meet the key players:

  • Sir Stephen de Blenerhayset – a sword-swinging knight on a quest for new squires
  • Lady Eleanor – a wise, witty character who is the go-to for all garden cures, castle politics, and medieval gossip.

Visitors can also enjoy regular 30-minute performances packed with tales of knightly adventures, castle life, and a glimpse into the high society of the Middle Ages.

And, if you fancy trying your hand at something more hands-on, you’re in luck. The immersive medieval games scattered across the castle lawn invite you to play at your own pace. With varying levels of difficulty, these games are perfect for little lords and grown-up peasants alike. And the best part? Wander at your leisure and get involved as you like.

Step Into Centuries of Stories

Hay Castle (HR3 5DG) is a remarkable blend of a medieval fortress and 17th-Century mansion house, located in the charming town of Hay-on-Wye, Powys. Originally built during the Norman invasion of Wales, the castle began as a ringwork fortification overlooking the town, dating back to the late 11th or early 12th Century.

Now managed by the Hay Castle Trust, a registered charity dedicated to preserving this historic site, the venue is open daily from 10am – 4pm, and is packed with cultural treasures, exhibitions, and charm in every turret.

A Medieval Escape

While your head may be full of medieval dreams by the end of the day, your feet will thank you for a good rest back at Lucksall Holiday Park. Nestled by the River Wye, with woodland walks and luxury glamping options, it’s the perfect place to trade your jousting stick for a campfire snack and a view of the stars.

Secure your stay at Lucksall today. Live like royalty and let the adventures begin.
